Day 1 - An Introduction to QuarkXpress
- If you want to work at home, this lesson can be downloaded from here:

- Watch the teacher demonstration for the "day-1 activity"
- Open "Lesson 1 - The Concepts" from the following directory on our file server: Vol1 on
'MSS' (Q;)/Comm Tech/Grade 11/QuarkXpress/module 1/lesson 1
- Save the template to your "G" drive.
- Follow the instructions on pages 3 through 24 to complete the exercise. (One partner will
read the instructions and the other will complete the task).
- As you are ready to save each step of your work, be sure to show the completed step to
your teacher.
- When you have completed the exercise, browse through pages 25 to 60. These pages
explain the details of what these tools can do.
- Have your teacher mark your work then check your assessment sheet and circle the
appropriate mark
Homework:
- Tomorrow, bring a photograph of one of your parents or a guardian.
- Interview this person and ask the following questions:
- Where and when were you born?
- What was it like when you were a teenager?
- What music did you listen to (name one artist and song)?
- What style of clothes did you wear?
- What was your favorite hobby?
- What were your friends into?
- What has changed the most since you were a teenager?
- If you could have done anything for a career, what would you have done?
- Do you have any advice for our readers?
- (Interviewer - add 2 or 3 open ended questions of your own)
Day 2 - Applying your Learning
- Today, you will create a second document which has the same layout as yesterday's
exercise. This time the partners will switch roles. The person who was reading will now
control the computer and use the same template as yesterday. The person who was
controlling the computer will now use a word processor to create the text for your
document. How are you going to solve this problem if you have trouble importing your
text from your word processor to QuarkXpress,?
- Scan the picture you brought in so you can insert it into your document in place of the
"pastels" image.
- Replace the large text with the name of the person you interviewed.
- Insert the text from the interview.
- Complete your document and show the completed product to the teacher.
- Have your teacher mark your work then check your assessment sheet and circle the
appropriate mark
Day 3 - Lesson 2 - Text Fundamentals

Day 4 - Lesson 3 - Picture Fundamentals

- Follow the instructions on pages 91 through 107 to complete the exercise. (One partner
will read the instructions and the other will complete the task).

Day 5 - Written Test
- You can search the .PDF documents for keywords as a means to find information to
study.
- Take the first ½ hour of this class to prepare for the written test. To succeed in this test,
you will need to understand the following topics:
- Guides (how do you create, show, use and manipulate them)
- Rulers
- Item Vs. content tools
- Pop-out tools
- Page Grabber
- Runnaround
- The function of each tool in the "Tools Palatte"
- The meaning of each field in the "Measurements Palatte"
- How to manipulate images using a mouse (resize, move within picture box etc...)
- You will also need to know the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Show/Hide Tools
- Zoom in/out
- Fit in window
- Center Pictures within boxes
- Fit to picture box
Day 6 - Treatment
- Today, your group will create a treatment for your mini-magazine and begin to create
rough sketches for the layout. A treatment is a general description of what your magazine
will be about. In the treatment you will give an over-view as to the contents of each page
(8 pages in total). This treatment is to be typed and turned in by the beginning of
next class. All the people who are featured in this magazine must be local. You must
incorporate at least one of each of the following page layouts in your magazine (click on
each layout to view it) : layout 1, layout 2, layout 3, layout 4.
- You are to create a rough sketch for each page of your magazine. This does not need to
be a "work of art" - just a series of shapes where you indicate what the content of each
shape will be.
- The content of your magazine is up to you. I would offer the following themes as
suggestions: sports (school teams), 4 wheelers, dirt bikes or snow machines, a local band,
local heros, fashion, around the school, local news, wild hair, tatoos, school life, island
life. Your magazine must make people look good. Never put anyone down or make fun at
anybody's expense! All images must be created by you (no copying). You may want to
include one or two (maximum) of the following fillers: horoscope, study tips,
advertisements, fitness tips, opinions, solutions to problems, movie review, video review.
Note all content must be appropriate for school and approved by the teacher.

Day 7 Reviewing the Treatments and Getting Started
- Show your treatment and rough sketches to your teacher to make sure they are
appropriate.
- Watch the teacher demonstration on the various tool options.
- Have Fun!!!! - work as a team and share you ideas with other teams.
Days 8 Through 12 - Completing your Project
- This project must be completed by the end of 12
- Enter a final page with pictures of the group members and as hort paragraph on the roles
each of you played.
- Enter a paragraph in which you list the things you liked and dislike about this unit.
- Make at least one suggestion on how this unit could be improved.
Day 13 - Marking
- Have you completed project open on your computer at the start of class.
- Be available when the teacher marks your work
- Ask your teacher for the "Advance Organizer" for today's video.
- Watch the video, answer the questions.
