The objective of the eSpirit
(entrepreneurial spirit) Learning Café
is to provide KTEI students with an opportunity to customize their high school and post-secondary
program learning experience and build on their strengths and interests
through a variety of new and enhanced learning options. Besides building an
early foundation towards becoming a Specialist
High Skills Major, the eSpirit Learning Café does double duty as a small
business incubation learning opportunity for Aboriginal youth. Services include a student-operated (KTEI staff supervised) small
business lunch counter, tuck shop, canteen, school supplies open to KTEI
students.

MINISTRY FUNDED KTEI YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM OFFICALLY BEGINS FALL 2011
[M’Chigeeng, ON] – The youth entrepreneurial spirit will soon be ignited this Fall (2011) at Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute with an approved financial boost of $75,000 from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. Workshops, facilitated learning, field trips, and practical words of wisdom and inspiration from already successful First Nation entrepreneurs are only some of the activities being planned. The project has been named the e-Spirit Learning Café to signify the importance to Anishinabek generation X’ers and generation Y’ers that entrepreneurial options can become a part of building successful futures – not only for themselves, but for the overall growth and sustainability of Anishinabek economies as well – the end result which will be a double benefit for everyone.
While post-secondary education is extremely important in developing capacity for First Nation communities, it is equally important that First Nation economies are developed by promoting private sector business development because it is business – not government or band administration jobs – that will ultimately drive opportunities for the future. “Aboriginal youth in this project will learn about their own entrepreneurial-spirit, and put into practice concepts and principles learned by sharing business ideas and plans with similar-minded youth …all Anishinabek youth are encouraged to learn and participate in this exciting program because growing the private sector will be key in building healthy and sustainable economies for our First Nation communities”, said Beverly Roy-Carter, KTEI’s Director of Business and Training.
With KTEI’s recent move to a new facility, and with a projected 75+ part time and full time students expected to enrol in Sept 2011 in KTEI’s high school co-operative education program, apprenticeship programs, and college and university programs, the e-Spirit learning café project easily lends itself toward the development of business skills within a supervised incubation environment. For the students of KTEI, this project will allow for the development of the e-Spirit Café and Tuck Shop which will be a student-operated business offering affordable student lunch-n-go services (which will be open to the public), sale of KTEI school clothing, and offer convenient school supplies for sale all within the KTEI student centre. Students who choose to participate in this voluntary entrepreneurial learning program while at school will find it to be an excellent practical enhancement to their various programs of study.
But, the project is not intended to only benefit KTEI students. The entrepreneurship workshops, seminar activities and field trips will be open for ALL youth to participate regardless of where they may live or may be going to school. The best part of the program is that is also FREE – there is no cost to register to participate.
And while planning of events is currently underway, goals for the project include having ten (10) to twelve (12) entrepreneurial learning seminars/workshops on various subjects; these topics will range in scope from learning what the entrepreneurial process is all about, to characteristics of entrepreneurs, learning the different typologies of entrepreneurs and knowing the difference between ideas and opportunities. Development of a personal entrepreneurial model (self-inventory and analysis) will also be done. In addition to workshop and seminar learning, keynote speaker engagements and on-site visits to Aboriginal business and entrepreneurs are also planned. But before the workshops, seminars and field visits are planned in too much detail, the youth will have an opportunity early on in the program to provide direct input and ideas on the topics they would like to see covered to ensure project success.
KTEI’s valued partners in the e-Spirit Learning Café project are the Waubetek Business Development Corporation, The School of Skills Training (formerly called The Enterprise Centre, with Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology, Sudbury, ON), and the Business Development Bank of Canada. And while the e-Spirit Learning Café project has been funded by the Ministry of Economic Development Trade for 12 months only at this particular time, there is a possibility of multi-year funding. This would be an ideal situation, especially so that a year-over-year continuous intake of new entrepreneurial spirits can be ignited!
