KTEI Post-Secondary School Programs
KTEI has offered post secondary programming, both university and college accredited programs, since 1994. The KTEI Adult Education Program offers community-based programs to its member First Nations and programs are also open to all students of all background in the surrounding area. KTEI has successfully negotiated articulation agreements with several colleges and universities and developed Joint Management Committees with the affiliated educational institutions. KTEI offers student support services as well as an Elder-in-Residence program to achieve student success.
Aboriginal Teacher (ATEP) Education Program, Queen’s University
The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) of Queen’s University Faculty of Education provides an opportunity for candidates to specialize in Aboriginal education. The Aboriginal Teacher Education program is community-based, using an intensive mode delivery approach. Community-based courses are adapted to local contexts and needs, and include Aboriginal perspectives, balancing Aboriginal-specific and student-centred learning with knowledge of the teaching/learning process and research on Aboriginal education. The community-based component includes a course specifically on Aboriginal Teacher Education, and Practicum Placements in First Nations schools.
Upon successful completion of the program, candidates receive a Diploma in Education or a Bachelor of Education degree; candidates also receive the Certificate of Qualification as a teacher, allowing them to teach in First Nations and Provincial schools.

Anishnaabemowin Immersion Program, Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology

This unique certificate program is the only one of its kind found in Ontario Community Colleges. Students have the opportunity to become immersed in the Ojibwe language 95% of the course time. Utilizing an immersion-based approach to learning language, this program is designed to enable students to develop a level of conversational fluency in which to effectively communicate in Ojibwe. Implementation of originally designed curriculum and utilization of effective teaching modes provides students with a learning environment that is not only conducive to language learning but also provides a connection to First Nation traditions, culture and values.
Upon successful completion of the program, candidates receive a Certificate from Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology.

Academic and Career Entrance Program, Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology

This program is for individuals considering changing careers, re-entering the job market or seeking the necessary post-secondary and skills training to enter the job market for the first time. This highly flexible program is designed to meet the individual needs of adult students.
Individual timetables and courses of study are developed to accommodate student training needs and personal schedule. Students improve their understanding of mathematics, science, english, computers and native language and cultural development. Students develop productive study habits, practice speaking more effectively, and learn employability skills such as critical thinking, team building and problem-solving important to employers. Students receive individual evaluations to determine what specific topics must be studied to prepare for the next step in their training. Academic courses are individualized.
The nature and content of this Aboriginal transition experience program is to offer a broad array of post-secondary preparatory courses and services including academic preparation in math and science courses; information sharing to educate students and parents about post-secondary options, testing and admission requirements, financial aid procedures, and campus life; peer mentoring provides educational and social support; social enrichment activities provide students with the opportunity to learn leadership, master student study skills, set-goals, visit post-secondary campuses, and explore college or workplace options.

Bachelor of Social Work, Native Human Services, Laurentian University

This is an applied three-year program of study leading to the Bachelor of Social Work degree. Courses are taught within social justice and anti-oppression frameworks, with attention given to the historical background, issues and continued strivings of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. The Program is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work. This will be part-time over three years - KTEI-LU Collaborative Program. In partnership with KTEI, the School offers a program that responds to the needs of First Nations students and communities following the traditional practice of KTEI. Program delivery for the BSW is presented at a site provided by KTEI. This Advanced Standing program allows students to remain in their communities and their jobs.

Graduates of the Early Childhood Educator Program may be employed in day care centres and nursery schools as teachers and/or supervisors. These career opportunties involve a variety of age groups including infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children. Many early childhood educators are employed in programs for exceptional children, including day care settings, nursery schools, and public and separate school systems. Positions as private home day care providers, infant stimulations workers, or home programmers may also provide opportunties for employment.
